Christian Brothers
Responding to Human Needs Worldwide Today
Edmund Rice, (1762-1844) founded the Congregation of Christian Brothers in 1802 in Waterford, in order to provide quality Catholic education to the materially poor. He heard God’s call in the poor, uneducated marginalized boys of Waterford.
Who we are
We are a group of men, inspired by the vision and example of Edmund Rice, who live in community and share a brotherhood. We serve the disadvantaged of our society. As Brothers, we try to imitate the life and example of Jesus with integrity, simplicity and fidelity.

What is important for us as Christian Brothers?
- Blessed Edmund Rice and his values.
- The Joy of Brotherhood. We experience the love of God in our lives. We want to share our search for God and our experience. We have a strong commitment to justice. We are on the side of the poor and disadvantaged. We empower people through education. (more)
What we do
The brothers have devoted their lives to working with youth. For over 200 years the Christian Brothers have been involved in education at Primary and Secondary schools. Nowadays their work has extended to other ministries such as youth work, adult education, parish support and second-chance education.
